Home Learning Tips (helpful for homework and for those on a reduced timetable!)

At ABA Horizons we really appreciate how challenging “home schooling”, we actually prefer the term ‘home learning’, can be - but please, don’t put too much pressure on yourself. If home schooling we’re 100% effective & flawless, a lot of educators would be out of a job.

We put together a tip sheet for you - but one we forgot to add, BE KIND to yourself! You are doing a great job 💙

Home Learning Schedule/Visual Daily Schedule

This resource was initially created with the COVID 19 pandemic in mind, but you can use the blank one as a visual aid for your little one including tasks like brushing teeth, breakfast, walking to school etc.

Please bear in mind that is our take on a schedule, we appreciate that every child is completely unique and so their interests & abilities vary. Please tweak and adjust so it’s suitable for your little one!

Colour/Car Match activity

This car/colour match activity ticks so many educational boxes and it’s so simple!

All it needs is you to gather the cars that match the colour blocks and the child will then ‘park’ the car in the matching colour box.

We’re working on hand eye coordination, fine motor skills, matching skills, and problem solving.

It also doesn’t have to be a car game, you could ask the learner to go and find something that’s the same colour as each box, you could cut them out and spread them around the house so they have to ‘drive’ the car further to find the right spot. There are so many possibilities. Enjoy!

‘Shake Your Sillies Out’ Ideas

We’ve all been there, that moment where you know the learner just isn’t focused anymore. You’re bored, they’re bored and maybe restless.

This is the perfect time to reset the tone with a little movement. It doesn’t have to be anything big or fancy, just a quick burst of energy release. Bonus points if you can do it outside – fun in the fresh air! Please find a list of some ideas you can use at home.

Brain Breaks

Brain breaks are important for the learner as they can help reframe and refresh their mindset.

Use them as a tool when you see they’re becoming bored, agitated, distracted etc. They’ll help to activate, energize and stimulate their brain.

COVID 19 Fine Motor Skills Activity ABA Horizons

Fine motor skill ideas

Fine motor skills involve the use of the small muscles that control the hand, fingers, and thumb.

Please find some of our favourite fine motor skill building activities – fine motor skills are important as they help the learner grasp, move and reach for things. These simple activities can help your child effectively use pencils, a zipper, buttons and more. The ability to complete self-care and everyday tasks helps a child’s self-esteem and confidence to increase.

Colour Scavenger Hunt

We love this activity as it can be used in so many different ways.

Indoors will encourage them to look high and low, in boxes and under sofa whilst outdoors will encourage them to look all around them for things to add to their masterpiece. Have fun!

Taste safe paint

We love this fun idea, and we especially love the fact that it is non toxic and every ingredient is edible, meaning peace of mind if your little one puts their hands in their mouth. The only downside is that it might not taste very nice! – enjoy creating your masterpieces and please share them with us by tagging us on...

DIY Puffy Paint

We love puffy paint here at ABA Horizons. The process of making the paint is great as everyone can have a role and get involved, and then playing with it is even better!

We love to talk about what we can see happening, the process details, any changes we spot, our favourite part of the activity etc. Not only great fun – but a great discussion piece too, try it out and see what your learner gains from the experience - Let us know what you think on...
